Standby Cruises: How They Really Work
Two published standby programs, their rules, and who should use them.
Ask About Open CabinsStandby cruises do exist, but only at a few lines and under strict rules. Here is how the two published programs we found work, as described on each line’s own site in October 2026.
Holland America Line Standby Program
- You join a standby list for an eligible sailing and pay the reduced fare when you join.
- Eligible departures listed included Seattle, Vancouver, Whittier, San Diego, Fort Lauderdale or Miami, and New York.
- The lead guest must be 21 or older, and the program is aimed at people living within driving distance of the port.
- Guests are cleared in the order they joined, roughly seven to two days before departure. There are separate lists for inside/oceanview and verandah cabins, and you cannot choose a cabin.
- If you are not cleared you are refunded; once cleared, the fare is non-refundable. You cannot remove yourself from the list after joining.
- Solo guests may join but can pay a single supplement. The offer cannot be combined with others and may change without notice.
Princess Cruises Standby Program
- Available on select sailings from Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Seattle.
- You join seven to two days before sailing and pay in full when you join; the guest joining must be 21 or older.
- Two lists: inside/oceanview and balcony. Cabins are assigned automatically.
- Confirmation goes out in the order guests joined, up to about 48 hours before departure; if you are not confirmed, the booking is cancelled with a full refund.
- Once confirmed, the booking is non-refundable, and the line’s vacation protection plan is not available.

Are Standby Cruises Worth It?
For the right traveler, yes. If you live within a short drive of one of the listed ports, have time off you can use at a week’s notice, keep your documents current and do not mind which cabin you get, a standby list is a genuine way to sail on cabins that would otherwise go unsold. For everyone else, the drawbacks are real: you tie up money with no guarantee, you cannot plan time off or travel in advance, and once confirmed you are committed.

Standby cruising rewards being ready. A packed bag, a valid passport, a pet sitter on call and a flexible employer are what make it work. If that does not describe you, a normal late booking — which you can choose, insure and plan — may be the better value.
The Alternative: Flexible Late Booking
Most people who want unsold cruise cabins are better served by booking normally, close in, on a sailing that is not full. You keep control of the dates and cabin, and an advisor can watch several lines at once. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise do exactly that; tell us your port and your window. Live promotions are posted at Wave Season.
Standby Cruises FAQ
Do Royal Caribbean or Carnival offer standby cruises?
We did not find a published standby program from either line when we checked in October 2026. They do publish last-minute offers, which are ordinary bookings, not standby lists.
If I clear standby and change my mind, can I get my money back?
Under both programs we reviewed, no: once you are confirmed, the fare is non-refundable even if you do not sail. You also cannot take yourself off the list once you have joined.
